Fish Shapes 5'- 6'
These are an easy to ride alternative to the high performance short surfboard shapes. The basic shape, now called Retro Fish, was developed in the 1970s. The Fish is usually wider, shorter and thicker than a short board and comes with a Swallow/Fish style tail and a larger twin fin set up.
It can have a pointed or blunt nose. The pointed nose version is less buoyant and higher performance. The blunt nose floats better and is easier to ride, even in smaller surf.
The Modern Fish is a similar shape but usually has a Quad fin setup.
This wide' floaty shape allows for a looser, faster board that is fun on those smaller wave days. It is a perfect board for someone trying to make the transition to short surfboarding. The "Fish" provides more surf days when waves conditions are small or sloppy.
Beginners/Intermediate: Recommended for Beginners with experience in other similar sports such as skating or snowboarding. Also for Intermediate riders seeking a fun, easy ride on small surf days.
Funshapes/Mini-Mals 6' - 8'
Depending on final dimensions they can also be known as Funboard, Mini Longboard or Egg. This board offers the best combination of the maneuverability of a short board and the ease and long swish turning of a Longboard.
If you're of intermediate build and you don't need the flotation of a full blown Longboard it is clearly the best of both worlds in a smaller package. It is also easier to carry and handle once you get out in the waves.
It is perfect for kids and smaller adults looking for a great beginners board or the experienced Longboarder needing something more challenging and maneuverable.
If you are an Intermediate or Beginner surfer who is only going to have one surfboard in your "Quiver" this is also your best choice.
Beginners/Intermediate/Experienced LongBoarders:
Athletic or experience with other board sports such as skating or snowboarding and a light to medium build.
Classic Longboards 8' +
The modern equivalent of the boards used by Hawaiians and made popular by "The Pioneer of Modern Surfing" Duke Kahanamoku, only much lighter than their wooden boards. You can paddle into almost any wave condition. The length allows you to hang ten all the way to the beach. Among the most popular boards in the water and for good reason, easy to start on and always fun.
Beginners/Anyone:
From 50lb kids to a 250lb grandfather. If you can stand up, you can probably ride it.
